If you are going from point to point, do not hail on unmarked taxis and cars. Likewise, never share taxi to other people you do not know. If you are planning to travel by bus or train, take extra precaution.

If you are planning to drink on public places, make sure you have someone who remains sober. Any sign of intoxication might attract professional robbers and thieves.

Make sure other people back at home know your itineraries and contact numbers and numbers of your travel document such as your passport before leaving. If there is no available bottled water, boil the water first before drinking.  Also, take your own toilet paper, especially if you will travel anywhere by train.  The toilet paper on trains is like brown grocery shopping bag paper.  Plan your bathroom trips well in the train, as when you are about 1/2 an hour before getting to a train station and 1/2 hour after leaving the station, the bathrooms will be locked, because the foot pedal flushing system dumps the waste out into the train tracks.  I suppose they want to avoid drinking up cities with human waste.  When you get to your train stop, be prepared for the possibility that you may have to pay for toilet paper if you use the public restroom in The train station.  You may also find that some public toilets are of the squatting type as you might find in some South East Asian countries.
